Scarbee J-Fingered is the second in the Scarbee J-series bass libraries and has been recorded just like the J-Slap - for a perfect companion library.

For the Scarbee J-Fingered bass, the second in the series, 1046 samples are dedicated to each of the 3 pick-up settings: bridge, both, and neck, providing a total of 3138 samples, or 1.15 GB on the CD. As in J-Slap, the musicality of this handmade Celinder J Update 4 is expressed in every possible hammer-on, pull-off, grace-note, staccato-release or slide; with any sustained note combination reproducible in every authentic context.

For the first time, the sustained bass notes have been sampled with both right hand index and middle finger (up to 8 sustained note per note), providing very realistic sounding bass lines. This library also contains 2 different sets of staccato-release samples: loose and tight which really brings life into your bass playing. J-Fingered has also both soft and hard legato-tails, even more slides than J-Slap and a complete new set of fret-noises. The programming is almost identical to J-Slap as these two libraries are meant to be used as one bass sound.

DX REX: Revenge of The Dinosaurs

With 4 oscillators, 8 waveforms assignable to each, 8 algorithms possible per voice plus 3 assignable LFO waveforms, the Yamaha DX11 could do more than any previous FM synthesizer. With its 12 bit internal engine, it was the quietest by far of all the FM synths. It never goes out of tune and can duplicate any sound ever made by any previous FM synth and almost all the original analog sounds such as Moogs and ARPs could make.

Unfortunately, the DX11 could still only make 8 notes at a time. Since its sounds are synthesized, it could never make a realistic drum sound, or duplicate the qualities inherent in PCM sample sounds.

Appearing almost simultaneously, the Korg M-1 could make 16 notes at a time. Even more importantly, its sounds were based on PCM sampled waveforms that were stunningly realistic for that time. It has a built-in sequencer, which made it a perfect stand alone choice for the one keyboard musician.

The kiss of death for the DX11 was that it had no onboard FX processor. The Korg had stereo 16 bit reverb, chorus, delay etc. that could make any voice sound great. The M-1 became a best seller and the Yamaha rapidly became extinct. The greatest of the FM dinosaurs never had a chance to be appreciated for what it COULD do.

So what happens when you apply OUTBOARD FX to the Yamaha DX11 and give it 64 note polyphony as a Gigasampler instrument?

You get some of the best sounding FM ever created. Fat pianos and clavs, killer organs, great lead synth sounds, and even some big analog strings that rival modern synths and have their own unique qualities.

You might even say that the DX REX Collection is the revenge of the dinosaurs. Here's why......

Before the Gigasampler, PCM keyboard sounds have been limited in storage size, forcing the manufacturers to "loop" the synthesizer voices. It was simply impossible to duplicate the attack envelope, LFO charactersitics and delayed vibrato etc. that are inherent in FM and analog synth sounds.

Every sample in the DX REX Collection is 44.1 stereo and lasts as long as the synth played the sound. For the first time, a sampler can realistically duplicate the dinosaurs' every move. That is what this collection is all about. We digitally profiled the "FM noise" of the synth and simply removed it. These samples have an unprecedented signal to noise ratio for FM sounds.

Almost all the voices in this collection are original creations. (we did include some favorite presets, but even those are lightly enhanced through editing and outboard processing.) Pitchbend/LFO and other Gigasampler parameters such as AfterTouch have been carefully added for even further enhancement of the original voices.You can look forward to having brand new, never before heard voices that combine smoothly with each other, as well as blending with the more "modern" sounds from other samples collections. After 11 years of obscurity, this collection truly is....... the DX that roared.

Worra's Prophet: Sequential Circuits P-5

When the Prophet 5 arrived 1978 it set the new standard for the Eighties!. It is still loved by many, even today, for it's great string sounds, analog effects, and punchy analog basses.

Some data: 5 voice polyphony - 2 oscillators per voice and a white noise generator. The analog filters, envelope and LFO all sound great and are extremely flexible.

Some of the artists that have used the Prophet-5 include: Kraftwerk, Duran Duran, Vince Clarke, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Gary Numan and New Order.

The Prophet-5 I used for this collection is, I’ve been told, the very one used to make the music score for John Carpenter’s film "The Escape From New York", but I don’t know&ldots;.

A bit about the gig’s and the way they were done.

There are 36 gigs on the CD, ranging from ultra-punchy analog basses to spacey pads. Total size of the collection is over 600 megabytes.

editor's note *In the final version of the collection a few Gigs were removed just to get the size small enough to fit on a single CD.

All the samples were recorded digitally directly into the PC. The only thing that has been done to them is that the samples have been normalized to 0.0 dB.

The sounds that have no infinite sustain are full envelope recordings. The sample ends only when the synth note faded on its own. The voices that would sustain indefinitely ARE looped, but the loop point doesn’t occur until 10-12 seconds into the sample so in most cases you’ll play the unlooped sound.

Each Prophet voice has been sampled in thirds, C, D#, F# and A. The Prophet had no velocity sensitivity, but Gigasampler adds velocity sensitivity by default, which helps make the voice more expressive. However, if you want to be a purist, set the velocity to "linear" in the instrument editor.

The Prophet sounds in this collection were programmed by Jonas Hammar who also owns it, and myself.
